Paddy Pimblett is riding high after one of the most impressive wins of his professional MMA career and he’s already got his sights set on the next fight, which may well be against Charles Oliveira. Pimblett submitted Benoit Saint Denis with a Peruvian Necktie in less than a minute of the co-main event of UFC 329, marking his fastest finish in over 10 years. It was a great rebound from his unsuccessful shot at the interim lightweight title at the beginning of the year and now he’s probably going to be back in line for another opportunity if he wins his next fight.

When Pimblett was interviews after the fight, he started out by breaking down the finish over Saint Denis:

“I knew I had that cinched up. I knew he was good at defending a guillotine, so we’d worked on other things around the guillotine, and that was just there. Picture perfect … And it wasn’t a proper Peruvian necktie, but I literally drilled a Peruvian necktie for the first time in about ten years about five weeks ago … And it was like a mixture between a D’arce and a Peruvian necktie.”

That win marked the 11th submission win on Pimblett’s record and although he’s a very well-rounded fighter, his Jiu-Jitsu has always been one of his biggest strengths. He seems acutely aware of that too:

”That’s just how good my Jiu-Jitsu is, I can link things together like that flawlessly. I’ve never done that before. I just done that on the fly. That’s how I roll. My Jiu-Jitsu is the best in the world.”

Pimblett went on to talk about what might be next for his career and he still has the same goal that he has done over the last few years:

”I wanna be a world champion. I wanna be the undisputed champion of the world. I wanna be the first ever world champion from Liverpool. And I’m gonna do that. I know that’s in my destiny. I know it’s in my fate. Whether it’s the next fight or the next 10 fights, I wanna be a world champion. It’s that simple.”

“If you want me to fight Justin [Gaethje] next, if you want me to fight Poshboy [Arman Tsarukyan] next, if you want me to fight Chorizo [Ilia Topuria] next, if you want me to fight Charles [Oliveira] next, anyone can get it.”

There’s plenty of great fights for Paddy Pimblett to take in the lightweight division but the most entertaining one from a Jiu-Jitsu perspective would clearly be Charles Oliveira. As far as Pimblett’s concerned though, he has the advantage over Oliveira there:

“I’d submit Charles. I’ve got nothing but respect for Charles, know what I mean? He’s an absolute legend in this sport, but he’s on his way out. And I think if he tries to grapple with me, I’d submit him. But we’d probably end up having a war for five rounds on the feet if I ever fight with Charles Oliveira.”
