Federação de Jiu-Jitsu: A local BJJ blue belt in Perth, Australia has now been charged with Manslaughter after an incident ended with him applying a rear-naked choke to another man. Christian Jack Joseph is a doctor who has been training and competing in Jiu-Jitsu, and according to a report by ABC; he was involved in an altercation with a 63 year-old man. He was reportedly out with friends in the Fremantle area celebrating a birthday on Friday, July 10th, 2026. It was when the night had wound down that Dr Joseph and a friend returned to a friend’s house, allegedly finding a man looking through the window.

Dr Joseph then allegedly chased the man down and pinned him to the ground, before applying a rear-naked choke for approximately 1 minute and 50 seconds according to ABC. The man fell unconscious and Dr Joseph reportedly then started applying CPR, while his friend called Emergency Services. The man was then taken to a nearby hospital but died, and Dr Joseph was arrested by law enforcement at the scene. A neighbour, George Sanderson-Brown, told reporters that he was woken by screaming and he described it as follows:

“[It was] not like fun screaming or [when] someone is drunk. It was a deep scream like when … it actually hurts.”

The case is still unfolding of course, but the incident brings attention to an aspect of training in Jiu-Jitsu and other combat sports that is often overlooked. Being an experienced martial artist gives anyone a clear advantage over an untrained opponent and that can lead to disastrous outcomes. Scientists have already shown that chokes will often put people to sleep in under 10 seconds, and the damage that joint-locks can cause is obvious to anyone. This means that anyone who actually applies a submission in an altercation in the street not only has to be hyper-aware of what they’re doing, but they’re still running the risk of causing serious injury regardless.
