My history in Jiu-Jitsu began in 1958 at the legendary Serrana de Teresópolis academy in the state of Rio de Janeiro, of master Geny Rebelo de Azevedo, an academy committed to the development of the student mentally and technically, under the teaching of master Geny. The Jiu-Jitsu developed at the time featured full Jiu-Jitsu, with training aimed at learning and perfecting standing fighting contemplating falls and levers, the classic ground fight of root Jiu-Jitsu, defense full staff, anything goes training, self-defense actions with emphasis on firearm attack, melee weapon and miscellaneous attacks. Black Belt since 1972 under master Geny, I started my career on the mats as a teacher in my own academy, located in the Flamengo neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, the teaching methodology was based on full Jiu-Jitsu where I prioritized all aspects of the modality with an emphasis on Personal Defense. Kept the gym running until 1976, at the end of the academy's activities, I moved my residence to the city of São Paulo, where I moved away from the paid activities of Jiu-Jitsu. In São Paulo in the early 1980s, I dedicated myself to teaching Jiu-Jitsu to my children and guests of our academy, closed to the general public. After an invitation from the São Paulo Jiu-Jitsu Federation, I approached FPJJ and joined in 2014, not counting the previous years of Jiu-Jitsu. In recent years i carry out philanthropic activities with the young population of São Paulo state education in the Ipiranga neighborhood, developing self-defense actions for children and women and classic Jiu-Jitsu.

Diplomat of the mats: the international saga of Professor Marco Alemão Crossing oceans to spread the banner of soft art on foreign soil requires much more than keen technique and a track record of memorable victories. It demands resilience, the ability to adapt to new climates and cultures, as well as a holistic vision that sees sport not only as combat, but as a tool for social and educational transformation. In this setting of soft art ambassadors is the teacher and competitor Marco Alemão. His journey across borders began in 2017, when he was still in the brown belt and packed his bags for the prestigious IBJJF pan in the United States. That international baptism of fire was the trigger for a victorious championship career, collecting medals ranging from the ADCC Open to the Opens of Lisbon, Dublin, Orange County and San Diego. In this exclusive interview, the dynamic black belt opens the book of his trajectory and shares the behind-the-scenes of his saga across the United States and Europe. He details how multicultural learning has shaped his vision as a team manager, reveals the secrets to keeping doors open and mutual respect between rival teams, and explains how he uses this unique baggage to drive BJJ's professionalization and diffusion. GRACIEMAG: You have a long career as a Jiu-Jitsu teacher and competitor outside Brazil, especially your passages through Europe and the United States. What are the highlights of this international saga and what did you learn from it? MARCO: My international trajectory began in 2017, when I traveled to the United States to compete in the IBJJF Pan American Championship as a brown belt. From this experience, I started to compete regularly in high-level international events, accumulating significant results in different countries. Among the main highlights of my international career are the titles: ADCC Open Champion, Lisbon Open, Dublin Open, Orange County and San Diego Open. Conquered in front of high-performance athletes from different schools and countries. I also obtained relevant results in IBJJF competitions and in internationally recognized tournaments, consolidating my presence in the competitive scenario. These achievements allowed me to represent Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in major events visibility and build a trajectory recognized for both sports performance and the ability to transmit technical knowledge in multicultural environments. You moved between two different schools, Gracie Barra and CheckMat, maintaining a good relationship with the leaders of both teams. How did you contribute within these two famous networks of gyms to the spread of BJJ around the planet? I am a black belt graduated by Professor Gilberto Gabas, of Checkmat Araçatuba. In 2018, during my move to Portugal, I started a new phase of my career within Gracie Barra, where I deepened my knowledge in sports management, teaching methodology and team development. Subsequently, in October 2022, I founded and led the Gracie Barra Barreiro unit in Portugal, becoming responsible for the implementation of the organization's technical programs in the region. During this period, I developed the work of training students, expanding the practice of Jiu-Jitsu and strengthening the brand's presence in a community where the modality was still growing. Under my leadership, the academy achieved results such as: Training/introduction of more than 100 students; Participation in national and international competitions; Winning of titles by team athletes (including student Deivid Martins, champion Lisbon Open 2024; student Lara Flório, 3rd place in the European Kids 2024; student Alicia Mendonça National runner-up 2025); Development of programs aimed at children, adults and competition athletes; Expansion of the team's visibility in the Barreiro region, Setúbal. My contribution has always been focused on the sustainable growth of the sport, training practitioners, athletes and future leaders within the Jiu-Jitsu community, helping the team expand from 11 schools in 2022 to more than 25 units present in the Portuguese territory today. Returning to work in front of the dojo, what is the secret to turning an average athlete into a great champion? The main factor is building a consistent training system. Champion athletes emerge not only by talent, but by the combination of methodology, technical repetition, adequate physical preparation and mental development. As a coach, I try to create an environment of high performance, with clear goals, constant monitoring and focus on daily evolution. The goal is to transform habits of excellence into routine, allowing the athlete to reach their maximum competitive potential. How do you define yourself as a Jiu-Jitsu teacher? Tell us a little about your methodology. My methodology was built from the experience acquired over 17 years of training, 9 of them being black belts, competing internationally and teaching students of different profiles and nationalities. In addition, I created an interaction system in which during the explanation of the techniques, the students were asked about the score of the resulting fight. Still with the objective of training new leaders, I opened the Study Hall, which consists of giving the responsibility of teaching the class to advanced students under my supervision, thus preparing them for: serious and adequate posture before the class, control and mastery of techniques, commitment to schedules respecting the beginning and end of the class. What were your main achievements in championships in the black belt and what lessons did these medals leave for you? Throughout my career as a black belt, I have won important titles in different countries. These results were obtained by facing experienced athletes and representatives of some of the main teams on the international scene. More than medals, these achievements demonstrate the consistency of a career built over years of dedication to the sport. The combination between competitive results, international performance as a teacher and leadership of my own academy gave me a comprehensive view of the development of Jiu-Jitsu in different countries. When someone hesitates to train Jiu-Jitsu, what do you usually say to convince that person to wear the kimono and start the journey in the gentle art? I try to understand the person's goals first. Everyone comes to Jiu-Jitsu for a reason: health, self-confidence, discipline, defense personal or even lifestyle change. I show how art can positively impact all these areas. More than convincing, my role is to help the person see what Jiu-Jitsu can transform in their life. Jon Jones praises Ciryl Gane and admits that he predicted Alex Poatan's defeat at the UFC White House The fight for the interim heavyweight belt, held at the UFC Casa Branca co-main event, was, on paper, and also in the main bookmakers, one of the most balanced fights of the historic event at the headquarters of the US Government. Despite the unpredictability linked to the confrontation at the time, a figure of weight in combat sports claims that he already projected what would be the result of the fight between Alex ‘Poatan’ Pereira and Ciryl Gane: the former champion of the category, Jon Jones. Grand Slam glory: Tainan Dalpra and Gabi Pessanha According to IBJJF (News), the 2026 Brazilian marked the 32nd edition of the prestigious event. In addition to the excitement of the audience and the intense fights that characterize the tournament, it also represented the end of an incredible season. With the end of the 2025-2026 season, two athletes achieved the final feat to become Grand Slam champions. Gabi Pessanha has demonstrated dominance in both the super-heavyweight category and the absolute since it reached the black belt level in 2021. The InFight athlete quickly cemented herself as one of the most dominant competitors in jiu-jitsu history. The 2025-2026 campaign was no exception to her brilliant trajectory, as Gabi won the Grand Slam title in the super-heavyweight in a spectacular way. In her five years at the top, Gabi has logged five consecutive Grand Slam campaigns. Surprisingly, each of its first three seasons ended with double Grand Slam titles, totaling twenty-four gold medals in major competitions in that period.
