Jiu-Jitsu Federation: The hard defeat suffered by Dricus du Plessis last Saturday (18), in the main fight of UFC Oklahoma, may have marked more than the end of a bad night for Kamaru Usman. Former welterweight champion (77 kg), the Nigerian revealed that he intends to reassess the future of his career and admitted, for the first time more openly, that retirement has become a concrete possibility.

In a recent episode of the ‘Pound for Pound’ podcast, presented by the fighter himself alongside Henry Cejudo, Usman explained that he intends to talk to his team and family before defining the next steps. At the age of 39, the veteran recognized that the moment requires a deep reflection on his permanence in the sport.

“Right now, I need to sit down with my coaches, talk to the team, and evaluate everything. See exactly where I am in my career. Do a general analysis and decide if it is still worth it keep fighting. If it's worth it to keep putting all of them through this, ”said the Nigerian.

The defeat to Du Plessis amplified a delicate scenario experienced by Usman in recent years. After dominating the welterweight division and defending the belt on five occasions, the African began to live with negative results after being dethroned, raising doubts about his ability to return to a title fight in the UFC.

“I need to go home, sit down with the team, talk to my family, evaluate everything and make a decision. This moment is as difficult as any. When you achieve so much and live so many moments of glory in the sport, feeling the low moments is not easy, "he lamented.

Guaranteed legacy

Considered one of the greatest welterweight players in UFC history, Kamaru Usman won the UFC belt in 2019 by defeating Tyron Woodley and remained at the top until 2022. when he was surprised by Leon Edwards with a knockout in the final seconds of the fight. Over the course of his reign, the Nigerian added five title defenses and cemented his name among the best pound-for-pound fighters of his generation. Now, in the face of negative results and advanced age, the veteran has an important decision to make: continue competing or put an end to one of the most remarkable careers in recent UFC history.
