Each Jiu-Jitsu belt, in detail

Each graduation represents a stage of technical and personal maturity. See the official drawing of each belt, what it means, the average length of stay and the degrees (stripes) that recognize evolution within it.

Belt Branca

Length of stay

Recognized degrees

This belt recognizes up to the 4 degree — each degree is a stripe that marks evolution within it.

Belt Azul

Ampliação do repertório e construção de jogo

A faixa azul é a primeira grande conquista do Jiu-Jitsu adulto.

Length of stay

Length of stay

Belt Marrom

Length of stay

Jiu-Jitsu Preta belt drawing

Belt Preta

Length of stay

Recognized degrees

This belt recognizes up to the 6 degree — each degree is a stripe that marks evolution within it.

Jiu-Jitsu Vermelha e Preta belt drawing

Belt Vermelha e Preta

Mestria e legado

Length of stay

Length of stay

How the degree system works

What are degrees (stripes)?

Degrees, also called stripes, mark the practitioner's evolution within the same belt, before advancing to the next color. Each color belt — White, Blue, Purple and Brown — recognizes up to 4 degrees. Upon completing the 4th degree and required time, the athlete is ready for the next graduation.

And on the black belt?

The black belt progresses through degrees up to 6th, valuing the master's continuous contribution. Then come the master belts (Red and Black) and grand master belts (Red and White), honorary recognitions for a life dedicated to Jiu-Jitsu.

Recognition by time up to 4th degree

In the federation, each degree up to 4th can be recognized by time at belt — without extra bureaucracy. When you register your graduation, you inform the belt and the date you were promoted, and the federation recognizes the degrees you already have a right to by practice time.

How long does it take to reach black belt?

Adding up the average time for each belt — White, Blue, Purple and Brown — most dedicated practitioners reach black belt between 8 and 12 years of consistent training. The actual pace varies by frequency, technical development and each instructor's criteria.

Frequently asked questions

What is the order of the belts?

No Jiu-Jitsu adulto, a ordem é: Branca, Azul, Roxa, Marrom e Preta.

How long does it take to reach black belt?

On average, 8 to 12 years of consistent training, adding up the typical time at each belt (white, blue, purple and brown) — the pace varies with dedication, training frequency and each instructor’s criteria.

What are degrees?

They are the stripes added to a belt you already hold (for example, blue belt 1st degree, brown belt 3rd degree). Each colored belt recognizes up to 4 degrees, marking progress within the same belt before the next promotion.

How many degrees does each belt have?

The colored belts (white, blue, purple and brown) have up to 4 degrees each. The black belt goes up to 6 degrees before the master belts. Each degree is a stripe recognizing time on the mat and technical progress within that belt.

How do I register my belt officially?

Register with the association giving your current belt, the date you were promoted and your instructor’s name. After review and payment for your belt certificate, your public profile and your certificate with its verification QR code go live — and your degrees can be recognized by time at belt.
